We left Cairns with the idea of heading towards Darwin before it gets too hot, well we think we have left our run a bit late as the temps are already in the
early 30's & rising rapidly!
It will be nice to leave Qld for a change to another state, as we have been here
since May & have really stayed on the coast all the way, apart from a bit of inland travel to the tip & across to Weipa.
The drive from Atherton through to George Town was a pretty drive, with lots of rolling hills, & heaps of my favorite Fresian Cows!
The Kennedy Hwy is a fairly good road, although some places it reminded me of our recent Cape York trip, where the road becomes a narrow track, the only diff is some of the scenery & this one is tared!
Just as i am writing this i looked up & wow what a sight!
Wind mills everywhere!
It is a wind mill farm!
So powerful to see!.........Hahaha Powerful get it!!
We decided to stop at Mt Garnett for lunch!
Now I was hoping for KFC or a Hungry Jacks as today is Friday, &
to us that is known as
Fat Fix Friday!
Mt Garnett has a population of approx 400 & consists of a police station, a couple of shops, a school & of course what is in every town........ Yep you guessed it!!
A Pub!
Well looks like a counter lunch of fish & chips is on the menu!
150 Km's from Mt Garnett to Mt Surprise & there is not much to look at!
Nothing but nearly dead straight road in front of us, & the ever present 10 ton of dead animals, which consisted of Pigs, to Roos to Cows to Eagles!
Now it is no wonder that the Eagles get hit, as they do not like to leave their feast & will stay on the road till the last second!!
We end up having to blast the horn at them, then they fly low & don't have a clue what they are doing & hover around in front of the car!!
Then to top it all of that lingering aroma of rotting carcasses
which waft prominently through our nostrils!
We arrived at George Town & set up camp for the night &
sat outside listening to
The Tigers vs Canberra game on the ABC.....That was the only station
we could pick up!
The game was in Canberra & the temperature there....3 degrees as against
our temp in George Town......33 degrees!
Up & At em & today we are off to Karumba for a short stay,
now this town is renowned for it's
fishing & magical Sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria!
The lady who runs the servo at George Town, said you need to get to the Sunset Tavern in Karumba very early, so as to get the best spot
to view this magical sight.
She also went on to add that it is just so so romantic!..........I turned to Husband & said are you listening to this woman???
I could picture it now......Butterfly's flapping whimsically around us, while we gaze lovingly into each others eyes, as we sip our wine, with our arms entwined as the sun sets in the distance behind!
Mmmmm....Wake up Sharon!!!
Well the day we arrived was perfect, so we got our spot early & watched the
Sunset over the Gulf.
Minus though, gazing eyes, butterfly's, arms entwined & fish to fry!
